Freo Social
Reviving a Fremantle Landmark
Freo.Social is a dynamic live music venue and community space housed in the heritage-listed Artillery Drill Hall in Fremantle. Our design reimagined the historic building as a multi-purpose entertainment hub, while respecting its unique architectural character and cultural significance.
Heritage Sensitivity Meets Contemporary Energy
Working closely with the National Trust of Western Australia, we developed a design approach that preserves original features such as the exposed trusses, timber floors, and masonry walls, while introducing new elements to support modern performance, hospitality, and community use. Acoustic treatments were carefully integrated to maintain the building’s historic fabric while enhancing the live music experience.
A Venue for All Occasions
The redevelopment created a flexible layout that supports live gigs, community events, private functions, and casual socialising. A new beer garden extends the experience outdoors, offering a relaxed setting connected to Fremantle’s street life.
Balancing Past and Future
Every design decision aimed to balance the building’s rich history with the needs of a contemporary venue — from upgrading the stage and back-of-house facilities to improving patron comfort, accessibility, and acoustics.
Freo.Social is now a thriving part of Fremantle’s cultural scene, bringing people together in a venue that celebrates both music and community in a heritage setting.
